Monterey is known for its dark skies, meaning, there is a minimum amount of light pollution, even here in town. I took this picture on a particularly clear night, after the moon went down. But obviously, there was a little light pollution that actually enhanced the image. The image was taken here in town, but it shows the potential for serious astronomers who trek to remote parts of Highland County for “Dark Skies” stargazing opportunities. Note what appears to be a galaxy just above the dark area (unlit garage in the center of the picture.)
A month later on a similarly dark and clear night I took the following image from Cemetery Hill overlooking the town of Monterey. The sky was beautiful that night and the result was awe inspiring.
